520 |a The late Atkins, a former collections librarian at Texas A&M Libraries and the author of other encyclopedias and books, offers a two-volume encyclopedia of 9/11. In addition to a chronology, the first volume contains about 175 entries organized alphabetically on people and events leading up to 9/11, what took place, and the aftermath, including participants in the plot, the reasons why American intelligence and law enforcement agencies were unable to prevent it, and conspiracy theories that have emerged. The second volume consists of primary source documents (50 in this edition) such as letters, briefings, testimony, eyewitness accounts, interviews, reports, and presidential speeches about the attacks, Al Qaeda, the PATRIOT Act, intelligence, and other aspects, and an annotated bibliography. This edition updates and adds entries on the Ground Zero Mosque controversy and the 2010 Times Square bombing attempt and entries on the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq conflicts, in addition to essays on how 9/11 influenced US foreign policy, impacted the use of presidential power, and shaped US public opinion.
