|a The role of forests as carbon "sinks" was highly contraversial in the recent international negotiations on mitigating the increase in atmospheric CO₂. This lecture discusses what we know, and what we don't know, about forests as sources of sinks of atmospheric CO₂, adresses these questions: How do we know that forests are absorbing CO₂, and how much is being taken up? Why are forests currently sinks for CO₂, and for how long might this uptake continue? Why are these scientific questions so contraversial in international affairs?
