Ronald, the main character, imposes his image of the perfect woman on his love Mirjam, but to his anger and frustration she follows her own interests entirely. This longing for complete coincidence, the perfect symbiosis with the other and the failing dialogue with existence are recurring themes in all his later novels. A story like a flame, with an absurdist twist, brighter in tone than his later work, but here at twenty-second as a writer already present in full force. 'The Expedition' is followed in this edition by 'The Masterpiece': the equally ironic and painful autobiographical account from the completion of 'The Expedition' in 1963 to the final publication of 'The Forbidden Garden' in 1986.
