While we might have worried that this tripartite game would turn into a dazzling but somewhat hollow spectacle: it is not so. All three have far too much creativity and they channel it well. Even competition with the computer (the keyboards are sometimes programmed to auto-play) works brilliantly for them. Affinities between these three are not new: Hancock and Zawinul both joined the variable formations of Miles Davis' groups. Gulda, born in 1930, an outstanding classical pianist who was known for his escapades and his sense for provocation, never hid his appetite for free improvisation. It is even said that he, alongside his friend Zawinul (two years younger and also Viennese) even dared to disobey the WW2 prohibition on jazz, proceeding to play stubbornly in public places. Rebels already, rebels always; a cause of absolute joy. **Philippe Lesage**"
