Description
Summary:"Works from the Kunstmuseum Basel's own collection form the basis of the focused exhibition 'Helmut Federle: 19 E. 21st St. Six Large Paintings'. Created in New York City, where the artist lived for several years, the painting 'Asian Sign' (1980) was acquired by the museum in 1982. The composition, which is based on the shape of the swastika, met with fierce opposition and provoked a controversial debate. Since then, works by Federle have entered numerous museums and private collections. In Basel, by contrast, the critical engagement with his art in the first half of the 1980s died down and was never resumed. To revive this conversation, the exhibition showcases six large-format paintings that date from between 1980 and 2005 and a number of works on paper, which are on view together with two artifacts from the artist's personal collection: a Persian ceramic bowl and a Japanese teacup. Numerous illustrations complement the essays written for this book."--
