Description
Summary:Examines the reasons for the upsurge of antisemitism in France since the outbreak of the second Intifada in Israel in 2000. While France is not antisemitic, it faces growing antisemitic political and media bias in concurrence with Muslim antisemitism. Based on interviews with Jewish leaders in suburbs with large immigrant communities, shows that Muslim violence has been triggered by Islamist claims that France is part of the domain of Islam, and not by the second Intifada. As a consequence of failed integration politics, Muslim Francophobia has turned into antisemitism, which undermines French society. Presents examples of the marginalization of Jewish intellectuals and politicians. Discusses antisemitism in French schools; French, Jewish, and Muslim reactions to the rise of antisemitism; French reluctance to admit its existence; expressions of anti-Zionism (and the role of Jewish anti-Zionists); and bias on French TV. Concludes that the current antisemitism, which threatens continued Jewish existence in France, is an indirect attack on the republic and on French democracy
