Summary: | "Witness the casually dressed and youthful Herbie Hancock play in his favorite setting: trio. While most of his post-Miles Davis gigs were across the board, from plugged-in funkmeister to acoustic sets of multiple players, in the '80s he took glee in putting together trios. While Hancock recorded trio albums with fellow Miles members Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums, for this European date he brings along a memorable rhythm section comprised of bassist Buster Williams and drummer Al Foster. Hancock opens the 1987 show with a meditative solo then widens the rhythmic scope by bringing in his trio mates. He swings, tumbles, dazzles, excites with his keyboard alchemy marked by joyful improvisational rides. Of note: his wonder at the keys on the moody then joyful song ""Air Dancing."" Today Hancock is the true jazz statesman as the ambassador of the music worldwide ... and is one of the best-known jazz names with the general public. He is the master of the music. **Dan Ouellette**" |
